Shiplap Wall

In hopes to focus on the positive among all the negative happening right now, I have a little nursery update for you! Mike and I spent some of our covid ‘Stay at Home’ time creating a shiplap wall in baby girl’s nursery!

I would like to note: we got the supplies well before the stay at home order was in place.

What you need:

  • Wood or shiplap
  • Miter saw
  • Stud finder
  • Nail gun
  • Trim

We used the 7.375-in x 12-ft PrimeLinx Shadow Gap Shiplap from Lowe’s because we liked the look of the wider plank.

Other reasons we chose this shiplap:

1. It has self-spacing edges which made it much easier to install.

2. We thought since they were already white we wouldn’t have to paint them, but once they were up, it looked dingy next to the doors and baseboards, so that was a no…

We started by measuring the wall to see how many boards we would need. It measured 140 inches wide and 91 inches high. We put two of the boards on top of one another to see the exact width of the board plus the space between. It was right at 7 inches a board (and space), so we needed 13 boards to span the entire height of the wall.

In order to get the shiplap/rustic look, we cut the 12-ft boards into 3 different lengths and arranged them so the vertical spaces between the boards matched every 3rd board.

The planning and measuring were the hardest part.

After that, we cut the boards and started nailing them to the wall! Most of the nails went into the edging of the shiplap so they wouldn’t show once the next board was up, but we also decided to put a nail in the top corner of each board as well to make sure they were securely on the wall.

After all the boards were secure, we painted them Sherwin Williams ‘Whitetail’. As you can see in the picture below, the left hand corner is not painted and is far from white 🙂 After 2 coats, these boards looked as good as our baseboards!

After painting them first, we added a trim piece across the ceiling and on both side walls. This really finished the wall off nicely!
