Winter Joy Sign

Buying holiday decorations can really break the bank… So my goal every year is to make something classic and timeless that I will be able to use for years to come! This year I made a neutral winter joy sign! And the best part about it was that it was super easy to make!! I chose a neutral sign so that I can enjoy it all winter, instead of just during the holiday season!

I started with weathered whitewashed reclaimed wood. Before I headed out to look for a wreath and letters, I measured the wood to see what size would work best for this piece of wood.

If you want to make this project very low cost, you can simply paint the ‘J’ and ‘Y’ directly onto the reclaimed wood!

I found letters I liked at Michaels: ArtMinds White Wood Letter A, 9”. I purchased a ‘J’ and a ‘Y’ (with a coupon of course)!

I went to a few different places to look for wreathes, but found the perfect one at Pier 1: the Icy Berry Mini Wreath! (I had a 20% off coupon and it ended up being less than $12.) After seeing this wreath I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my letters!

I used silver metallic spray paint for the first layer of paint on the letters. After that dried, I sprayed a lighter, second coat. With the second coat still wet, I sprayed the letters with a frosted glass finish. Because both sprays were wet at the same time, they intermingled to create a frosty look!

Now, I had the color I wanted, but not the texture. The wreath had berries that looked icy and frosted. So to get this look, I used spray adhesive and sprinkled on Epsom Salt. Once I had the texture I wanted, I sprayed another coat of the spray adhesive to add an outer layer of protection to the letters.

*Tip: I wanted a smaller snowy look, so I crushed the salt before applying.

To finish the letters off, I took a glittery silver ornament and rubbed it on the edges of the letters.

The final step is to secure the letters and wreath onto the reclaimed wood. I used a hot glue gun! Place each letter where you would like it to be on the wood and mark the top very lightly with a pencil. As you are gluing each letter, be sure to hold it in place for 30 seconds to a minute to make sure it is secure.

Then, I ran the glittery silver ornament around the edges one last time!

And as simple as that, you’re done! So find the perfect place for the sign and enjoy it all winter long!!
