DIY Pallet Sign

We needed a little something to add a decorative aspect to the wall of our back porch. Criteria: appealing to the eye, but also very durable because we are on the top of a hill and it gets very windy. We also didn’t want to spend very much money. This is what we came up with!

The process was so easy. Here are the steps to make your own pallet sign:

Step 1: Find a Pallet

You can find pallets everywhere, you just have to look! When you find one be sure it has the weathered look you are going for. Some will be like new, while others are basically falling apart. They all weather differently. I would also recommend finding a pallet that is on conceit rather than in grass. From personal experience, grass and wood = bugs!

Step 2: Pull Apart Your Pallet

This was the hardest part of the entire project. After testing out several techniques, the best way we found was to use a reciprocating saw to cut each of the nails to separate them from the rest of the pallet. Then, we pulled out the remainder of the nails.

Step 3: Pick Your Wood

Because the wood was weathered, some of the pieces were warped, so we threw them out. Then, we arranged the wood in the order we thought looked best! We flipped them all over to get them ready to build the sign.

Step 4: Build the Sign

We had some old tobacco sticks in the garage, so we used those to construct the sign. You can use whatever you have laying around. We nailed two tobacco sticks into the back of each of the boards to hold them in place.

Step 5: Treat Your Wood

We wanted to keep the rustic look the pallet already had, but also didn’t want people getting splinters etc if they touched the sign. So, we sanded the front and edges of the sign.

Step 6: Decorate

Because we were putting this on our back deck, we needed something durable decoration for our sign. We got an oversized metal “P” to hang in the middle of the sign. (DO NOT buy this full price. Hobby Lobby always has a 40% off available.)

We spent a total of $14.99 and a couple of hours on this project! And we are thrilled with how it turned out!
