DIY Fall Decor to Holiday Decor

We live in a fast paced world: constantly rushing around, stressing about something. And most people don’t have the time to decorate for every season. I have created an easy, DIY piece of fall decor that can quickly be turned into holiday decor.

DIY Holiday Door Tags

Inspired by Ballard Design Holiday Door Tags

The simplest way to DIY these Door Tags:

1. Go to Joanns – I was not able to find tags I liked at any of the other craft stores.

Buy 2 of either of the following (depending on which works better for your door or wreath):
Large Wood Tag with Twine Hanger – 10in by 4in
Extra-Large Wood Tag with Twine Hanger – 18in by 8in

2. Remove the small twine rope they provided.

3. Paint the wood with chalkboard paint. In some places I had to apply 2 coats. I used Chalkboard Paint by Craft Smart from Michaels because it is thick enough to cover any imperfections in the wood.

*Tip: Be sure to paint the sides of the tags.

I recommend painting on tarp or plastic because painting these on any type of paper will cause it to stick to your tags.

4. With a pencil, trace the words you want on each side of the tags (stencils work also). This will allow you to erase if you mess up, or if you write the letters unevenly across the tag.

You want to write: ‘Give’ on one tag with ‘Holidays’ on the back and then ‘Thanks’ on the other tag with ‘Happy’ on the back. This step is very important later in the project.

5. Using a white paint pen, trace the penciled in letters. My favorite is the Chisel Tip Multi-Surface Premium Paint Pen by Craft Smart from Michaels. The chisel tip allows you to create very fine lines in places and thicker lines in other places (you could even create a calligraphy look with this pen if you wanted to).

*Tip: If you are a lefty like me, I would recommend starting with the farthest letter to the right and working backwards. Smudges are lefties worst enemy when crafting!

6. To create the look you are going for, trace over the lettering as much or as little as you’d like. To remove any inconsistencies, I traced over the letters  twice in most places and then touched up from there.

Once dried this side is dry, flip the tags over and repeat this process to the penciled in words on the other side.

*Tip: If you mess up, don’t freak out… There is a simple fix! Just paint back over the areas you messed up with the chalkboard paint, and start again!

7. Once the paint pen is completely dry, I recommend sealing the tags with a clear protective topcoat. Like I said in my DIY Bar Cart blog, my favorite is Minwax Satin Polycrylic Finish – Clear Matte from Home Depot. This will allow the tags to be outside without weather conditions destroying them.

Apply a layer of this to both sides and edges of the tags and let them dry overnight.

8. Add twine rope to tie the tags together. This will allow you to hang the tags by themselves on your front door or to add a little something to a wreath you already have.

9. I would recommend hot gluing the tags to each other to keep them in place. You don’t want them hanging there overlapping each other. Or worse, the wind blowing them and instead of saying “Give Thanks” it says “Thanks Give” 🙂

The important part when gluing is to make sure you do not overlap any of your words as you glue them together. Make sure you check both sides before gluing!!

This step is where it is important you followed instructions in step 4: Give with Holiday on the back, and Thanks with Happy on the back.

9. The last step is completely up to you depending on what you plan to do with your tags.

In the first set of photos, I made a big burlap bow to finish off the tags. Then, placed them on our front door! In the second set of photos, I nestled the tags into a couple of wreaths I made last year.

This was such a fun project for me! I hope you have as much fun with it as I did! Let me know if you have any questions.
